A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The winning bid for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates locations throughout Japan and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the company president, a regular participant at the traditional first sale.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "surprised at the amount," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its locations throughout the country.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year gets underway," shared one elated customer.
